Reference table
Username rules by platform, in one table.
Before falling for a name, check it fits. These are the commonly documented limits for the major platforms — every platform can and does revise its rules, so treat the official signup screen as the final authority.
The comparison table
| Platform | Length | Characters generally allowed | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 30 | Letters, numbers, periods, underscores | Can't end with a period. | |
| TikTok | Up to 24 | Letters, numbers, underscores, periods | Can't end with a period; changes are rate-limited. |
| Discord | 2–32 | Lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, periods | Unique platform-wide; no two periods in a row. |
| X (Twitter) | Up to 15 | Letters, numbers, underscores | Short limit — long compounds won't fit. |
| Twitch | 4–25 | Letters, numbers, underscores | Underscore can't bookend the name. |
| YouTube (handle) | 3–30 | Letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, periods, some Latin-extended | Handles start with @ and are unique. |
| 3–20 | Letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens | Chosen once — it can't be changed later. | |
| Steam | Flexible (profile name) | Most characters | Profile names aren't unique; your account name is separate and private. |
| Xbox | Up to 12 (newer tags) | Letters, numbers, spaces (limited) | Classic tags allowed up to 15; uniqueness may add a suffix number. |
| PlayStation Network | 3–16 | Letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores | Must start with a letter. |
| Roblox | 3–20 | Letters, numbers, a single underscore | Underscore can't be first or last. |
| Minecraft (Java) | 3–16 | Letters, numbers, underscores | One account-wide name; changes are time-limited. |
Read this table as a planning guide, not a contract. Figures reflect the rules as commonly published by each platform and summarized in their help pages at the time of writing. Platforms adjust limits, grandfather older names (Xbox and Reddit especially), and enforce extra restrictions — on impersonation, reserved words and offensive terms — that no table can capture. The signup or rename screen in front of you always wins.
What the table means for picking a name
- Aim for 15 characters or under if you want one name everywhere: X's 15-character cap is the tightest common constraint, and PSN and Minecraft sit at 16.
- Letters and numbers travel; symbols don't. Periods are welcome on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and YouTube but banned on X, Twitch, PSN and Minecraft. An underscore is the most portable separator.
- Lowercase is the universal shape. Discord forces it; everywhere else, the lowercase version of your name is what people will type. Generate in mixed case if you like, but judge the name by its lowercase form.
- Fancy Unicode letters are for display names. None of the platforms above accept mathematical or script letters in the username itself — see fancy styles for where they do work.
